FAQ

What are the silicone teethers made of and are they safe?

We only stock teethers that are made and tested in compliance with Australian ISO Safety Standards. Silicone teethers are made from food grade silicone which is non toxic and BPA Free.

How old should my baby be before I give them a teether?

Teethers can be fun in general just to play with as a toy. As they are made to safety standards for little hands and mouths we recommend they are used from age 3 months and up, when baby is clasping and starting to hold items. Babies are able to suck and hold teethers before teething starts to happen. The different textures help to soothe babies gums while stimulating their mouths prior to teeth being visible.

What are signs of teething in infants?

Common signs of teething include:

  • swollen, inflamed gums
  • flushed cheeks
  • dribbling
  • slight fever
  • sucking fingers & fists
  • restlessness and irritability
  • have more dirty nappies more often
  • don't feed as well as usual

What is the recommendation on cleaning the teethers and oral products?

Silicone is best to be cleaned with warm soapy water and/or rinsed in boiling water then air dry on a clean surface.

They can be placed in the top drawer of your dishwasher to wash clean also.

If your teether has wood also, do not submerge the wood in water. It is best to clean using a damp cloth and if possible rinse the silicone in boiling water, air dry on a clean surface.

When should i introduce oral products like cleaning teeth and gums with my baby?

Dental care for baby teeth can start before your baby’s first tooth appears. Once your baby is about 3 months old, you can gently wipe your baby’s gums using a damp, clean face washer or gauze twice a day. This helps your baby get ready for brushing when the first tooth appears.

As soon as the first tooth appears, clean teeth using a soft infant toothbrush designed for children under 2 years. If your baby doesn’t like the toothbrush in their mouth, you can keep using a clean, damp face washer or gauze to wipe the front and back of each tooth.

Use only water on the toothbrush until your baby is 18 months old, unless a dentist tells you to do something else.

We stock Haakaa Silicone toothbrush and Haakaa Oral Care Kits which we highly recommend for babies.
